With sculpted gray limestone-based coatings and titanium plates, its miasma structure is itself a work of art which visitors will not fail to notice.

It was designed by a team lead by the prestigious Frank Gehry for the foundation of Solomon R. Guggenheim. It was opened in 1997 as the Museum of Contemporary Art whose major collections come from the Guggenheim foundation. These collections can still give you a feel for the sensuality of the famous and controversial Peggy Guggenheim, one of the most famous patrons of the arts of the twentieth century.

The Santa Maria Port

An exceptional choice

The Santa Maria Port is a great choice for those who want to spend a few relaxing days accompanied by their family in a place surrounded by a pleasant atmosphere. The inhabitants of Cadiz and the inhabitants of Seville are the ones who made the Santa Maria Port famous as they are the ones who started building chalets and villas in this wonderful resort, along its beautiful and attractive Playa Puntillo. The Playa Puntillo is not actually situated in the town itself but a few kilometers outside of it; however it is not difficult at all to reach it, so this is why it is considered to be one of Santa Maria Port’s major attractions. You only have to take a relaxing fifteen minute walk or one of the many local buses in order to get to Playa Puntillo and then the wonderful afternoon can start. Tourists love the place because besides the fact that it is a very picturesque one, it also has numerous friendly beach bars that offer very cheap sangria (if you plan to stay here at least a few hours, bring your own food because there are small chances of finding any).

Getting back to the town

Santa Maria Port has a series of attractions that keep the tourists entertained. For example, the sherry feels like home here, so you will find plenty of bodegas serving it. Another big attraction of the town is represented by the whitewashed houses that line the streets and the beautiful view given by the river’s banks. The port is another place that you have to visit; up until the town was connected with Cadiz by train, there was no shipment of sherry that did not come through Santa Maria. Some firms even offer tourists the possibility of choosing a tour that also involves tastings. However, these tours are not organized on a regular basis, so I recommend you to phone in advance and ask for information if you want to participate in one.

If you are in Cadiz and decide to visit the Santa Maria Port, take the ferry, because it is cheaper than the bus; there is also a catamaran service at your disposal that always leaves from quay number 7. You simply drive up the east coast until you reach its halfway point, because that is the place where you will find Porto Cristo, sitting on a hillside overlooking the harbor. Porto Cristo is a very busy town and some would describe it as old-fashioned, but it has a special charm that will make you fall in love with it. While in Porto Cristo, be sure to visit the two spectacular sets of caves situated in its surrounding area, as it will turn out to be a very pleasant day trip. The Santa Clara Island became popular because of its incredible beauty, a picturesque place that you will immediately adore. Located in the heart of the La Concha Bay, the island is the place where tourists love to go because it has some amazing beaches.
